David Anderson

A/Prof David Anderson is Deputy Director of the Burnet Institute. A/Prof Anderson’s responsibilities include coordination of commercial and translational research, in his role as Head of the Office for Business Development, Innovation and Research at the Burnet, as well as leading the Diagnostics Development Laboratory with a focus on unmet needs for infectious disease diagnostics in the developing world. A/Prof Anderson received his PhD in molecular virology from the University of Melbourne in 1989 and his major research interests include diagnostics and vaccine development, with over 60 peer-reviewed papers and 9 families of patent applications. He has founded a number of startup/spinoff companies based on his research, and has been involved in both contract and collaborative research agreements with the pharmaceutical and biotech industries from 1991 to present. Most recently his group has developed and commercialised a rapid, point of care assay for CD4 T-cells, which will support better use of antiviral drugs against HIV in developing countries, and is developing a POC test for detecting liver disease through a new spinoff company in China, as well as early stage programs in tuberculosis and other infectious diseases.
